Exercising to Keep the Feet Healthy

When the feet are flexible and strong, the risk of injury decreases. There are a few simple exercises to incorporate into your daily routine in order to maintain healthy feet and ankles. For flexibility, you can alternate among raising, pointing and curling your toes while sitting in a chair. You can also bring one foot up to the alternate thigh, and use your fingers to stretch the big toe up, down and to the side. For strength, try spreading the toes as far apart as possible while sitting. If you would like extra resistance, try putting a rubber band around the toes. You could also practice picking up a towel or marble off of the floor with your toes to improve strength. If you are near sand of any type, you can walk barefoot for an exercise that works both the feet and the legs. If you are in pain, you can try stretching the big toe and Achilles tendon, or rolling a golf ball under your foot while sitting. Remember to perform these tasks to the level that you believe is safe for your body. It is unhealthy to overdo these stretches. Types of Orthotics

Orthotics are prescribed shoe inserts that can correct biomechanical foot issues. A podiatrist can evaluate your foot to see if a customized orthotic device is necessary, or if a standard shoe insert will suffice. Should you need orthotics, there are two different kinds. One type is rigid orthotics, otherwise known as functional orthotics. They are typically made from a material such as plastic, and are used in shoes with low heels in order to ease foot strain. The other type is soft orthotics, also known as accommodative orthotics. These provide a soft cushioning to help with issues such as plantar fasciitis or diabetic foot ulcers. These orthotics are bulky, so a special type of shoe may be required. Orthotics are typically more expensive than shoe inserts, but may last longer as they are made specifically for you. What Are Orthotics?

Orthotics are inserts you can place into your shoes to help with a variety of foot problems such as flat feet or foot pain. Orthotics provide relief and comfort for minor foot and heel pain but can’t correct serious biomechanical problems in your feet.

Over-the-Counter Inserts

Orthotics come in a wide variety of over-the-counter inserts that are used to treat foot pain, heel pain, and minor problems. For example, arch supports can be inserted into your shoes to help correct overarched or flat feet, while gel insoles are often used because they provide comfort and relief from foot and heel pain by alleviating pressure.

Prescription Orthotics

If over-the-counter inserts don’t work for you or if you have a more severe foot concern, it is possible to have your podiatrist prescribe custom orthotics. These high-quality inserts are designed to treat problems such as abnormal motion, plantar fasciitis, and severe forms of heel pain. They can even be used to help patients suffering from diabetes by treating foot ulcers and painful calluses and are usually molded to your feet individually, which allows them to provide full support and comfort.

Plantar fasciitis is a painful condition in which the tissue connecting the heel to the toes becomes inflamed. There are several stretches and exercises to manage the discomfort of this ailment. To begin, place the balls of your feet on the edge of a step, with a towel under your toes. With your weight on one foot only, move your heel towards the ground, and then up to the ceiling. You should perform this routine on both feet. The next exercise requires a chair. While sitting, alternate between lifting your toes up, and then curling them in as tightly as possible. The subsequent stretch also takes place while sitting in a chair. Grab both of your big toes with your corresponding hands, and lift them up as high as possible. Once you are in this position, press your toes against your hands, in order to feel resistance. Keep in mind to perform this stretch to your level of comfort. The final exercise takes place with one leg in a kneeling position, and the other foot flat in front of you. Shift your knee past your toes, and then press the ball of your foot into the floor. Next, in this same position, raise the ball of your foot towards your own body. Be sure to repeat this on both sides. If these stretches are not helpful in relieving your plantar fasciitis pain, consult with a podiatrist.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, known as the plantar fascia, and causes mild to severe heel pain.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Excessive running
  • Non-supportive shoes
  • Overpronation
  • Repeated stretching and tearing of the plantar fascia

How Can It Be Treated?

  • Conservative measures – anti-inflammatories, ice packs, stretching exercises, physical therapy, orthotic devices
  • Shockwave therapy – sound waves are sent to the affected area to facilitate healing and are usually used for chronic cases of plantar fasciitis
  • Surgery – usually only used as a last resort when all else fails. The plantar fascia can be surgically detached from the heel

While very treatable, plantar fasciitis is definitely not something that should be ignored. Especially in severe cases, speaking to your doctor right away is highly recommended to avoid complications and severe heel pain. Hyperhidrosis of the Feet

What is Athlete’s Foot?

Tinea pedis, which is also referred to as “athlete’s foot,” is a skin infection that is caused by a fungus. It lives and thrives in warm and damp environments, so it is suggested to wear appropriate shoes while in these places. These include public swimming pools, shower room floors, and surrounding areas.
