Reasons Plantar Fasciitis Can Occur

Patients who have the foot condition known as plantar fasciitis generally cannot ignore the pain that accompanies it. This condition happens when the plantar fascia becomes inflamed, and the heel and calf are affected. The plantar fascia is the band of tissue that connects the heel to the toes and is found on the sole of the foot. Plantar fasciitis develops when the plantar fascia becomes inflamed, and this can happen for various reasons. Standing on hard surfaces for most of the day can contribute to getting plantar fasciitis, in addition to wearing shoes that do not fit correctly. Plantar fasciitis may hinder the ability to accomplish daily tasks and may worsen if prompt medical treatment is not received. Mild relief may be found when specific heel stretches are frequently performed. This is done by standing on a step while lowering one heel at a time until a gentle stretch is felt. If you are afflicted with plantar fasciitis, it is strongly advised that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can offer you the correct treatment options.

Plantar fasciitis can be very painful and inconvenient. If you are experiencing heel pain or symptoms of plantar fasciitis, contact one of our podiatrists  from Family Foot Care. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, known as the plantar fascia, and causes mild to severe heel pain.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Excessive running
  • Non-supportive shoes
  • Overpronation
  • Repeated stretching and tearing of the plantar fascia

How Can It Be Treated?

  • Conservative measures – anti-inflammatories, ice packs, stretching exercises, physical therapy, orthotic devices
  • Shockwave therapy – sound waves are sent to the affected area to facilitate healing and are usually used for chronic cases of plantar fasciitis
  • Surgery – usually only used as a last resort when all else fails. The plantar fascia can be surgically detached from the heel

While very treatable, plantar fasciitis is definitely not something that should be ignored. Especially in severe cases, speaking to your doctor right away is highly recommended to avoid complications and severe heel pain. Your podiatrist can work with you to provide the appropriate treatment options tailored to your condition.

Facts About Raynaud’s Phenomenon

If your feet and toes often feel cold, especially when stressed, you may have Raynaud’s phenomenon. While this condition is not inherently dangerous, it can cause discomfort. A common symptom of this circulation disorder is skin discoloration. First, the skin turns white as the flow of blood is restricted. The skin may then turn blue when the blood vessels are affected. Finally, the skin may turn red as blood flow returns. Other symptoms include pain, numbness, and a feeling of pins and needles. Moving the toes may seem difficult too. These symptoms can last a few minutes or up to an hour. To combat the occurrence of Raynaud’s phenomenon it is suggested that you quit smoking and limit the intake of caffeine. In addition, keep your feet warm with heavy socks and exercise them to increase blood flow. Experts suggest that if you first experience the symptoms of Raynaud’s phenomenon under the age of 12 or over the age of 30, you visit a podiatrist for a complete examination. These symptoms may be a sign of an underlying or more serious condition.

While poor circulation itself isn’t a condition; it is a symptom of another underlying health condition you may have. If you have any concerns with poor circulation in your feet contact one of our podiatrists of Family Foot Care. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Poor Circulation in the Feet

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) can potentially lead to poor circulation in the lower extremities. PAD is a condition that causes the blood vessels and arteries to narrow. In a linked condition called atherosclerosis, the arteries stiffen up due to a buildup of plaque in the arteries and blood vessels. These two conditions can cause a decrease in the amount of blood that flows to your extremities, therefore resulting in pain.

Symptoms

Some of the most common symptoms of poor circulation are:

  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Throbbing or stinging pain in limbs
  • Pain
  • Muscle Cramps

Treatment for poor circulation often depends on the underlying condition that causes it. Methods for treatment may include insulin for diabetes, special exercise programs, surgery for varicose veins, or compression socks for swollen legs.

As always, see a podiatrist as he or she will assist in finding a regimen that suits you. A podiatrist can also prescribe you any needed medication.

Early Signs of Arthritis in the Feet

While pain in foot joints is not unusual, particularly if you participate in high-impact activities like running, persistent aching, pain, and stiffness in joints may be a sign of arthritis. Arthritis usually affects people more as they age, and it can lead to disability if not tended to early on. Arthritis is classified as inflammatory arthritis or osteoarthritis, OA, which is the most common form of arthritis. It is a degenerative disorder caused by trauma, overuse, or wear and tear on foot joints. It often affects weight-bearing joints like the big toe. Inflammatory arthritis is a systemic disease where the mechanisms that normally protect the body attack their own joints and tissues. Rheumatoid arthritis is the most well-known of this type. With this type of arthritis, joint problems will often affect both feet at the same time. If you have continuing aching pain and stiffness in your feet, please see a podiatrist for an evaluation.

Arthritis can be a difficult condition to live with. If you are seeking treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from Family Foot Care. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Arthritic Foot Care

Arthritis is a joint disorder that involves the inflammation of different joints in your body, such as those in your feet. Arthritis is often caused by a degenerative joint disease and causes mild to severe pain in all affected areas. In addition to this, swelling and stiffness in the affected joints can also be a common symptom of arthritis.

In many cases, wearing ill-fitting shoes can worsen the effects and pain of arthritis. Wearing shoes that have a lower heel and extra room can help your feet feel more comfortable. In cases of rheumatoid arthritis, the arch in your foot may become problematic. Buying shoes with proper arch support that contour to your feet can help immensely.

Alleviating Arthritic Pain

  • Exercises that stretch the foot can prevent further pain and injury and increase mobility
  • Most of the pain can be alleviated with anti-inflammatory drugs, heat, and topical medications
  • Massages can help temporarily alleviate pain.

It is best to see your doctor for the treatment that is right for your needs and symptoms. Conditions vary, and a podiatrist can help you determine the right method of care for your feet.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our offices located in Valatie and Albany, NY . We offer the newest diagnostic tools and technology to treat your foot and ankle needs.

There are various foot conditions that will improve with medications and orthotics. For some patients, these types of treatments are not sufficient enough to provide complete relief. Foot surgery may be an option for some foot ailments, such as bunions and hammertoe. A bunion is a bony protrusion that develops on the side of the big toe, and in severe cases, may cause the other toes to shift toward each other. Surgery is performed by cutting the bones and realigning them into their natural position. The bunion is removed by repositioning the big toe joint which can make it easier to walk. The scar is located on the side of the foot, which makes it less visible. Hammertoe is a deformity that causes the joints in the middle toes to bend downward. Surgery can be successfully performed by straightening the toes which can reduce the pressure that is put on the front of the foot. Rheumatoid arthritis may cause flat feet in adults, and surgery may be necessary to reduce or eliminate existing pain completely. If you are experiencing specific foot conditions that are not improving with medication, please consult with a podiatrist who can determine if foot surgery is a viable option for you.

Foot surgery is sometimes necessary to treat a foot ailment. To learn more, contact one of our podiatrists of Family Foot Care. Our doctors will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

When Is Surgery Necessary?

Foot and ankle surgery is generally reserved for cases in which less invasive, conservative procedures have failed to alleviate the problem. Some of the cases in which surgery may be necessary include:

  • Removing foot deformities like bunions and bone spurs
  • Severe arthritis that has caused bone issues
  • Cosmetic reconstruction

What Types of Surgery Are There?

The type of surgery you receive will depend on the nature of the problem you have. Some of the possible surgeries include:

  • Bunionectomy for painful bunions
  • Surgical fusion for realignment of bones
  • Neuropathy decompression surgery to treat nerve damage

Benefits of Surgery

Although surgery is usually a last resort, it can provide more complete pain relief compared to non-surgical methods and may allow you to finally resume full activity.

Surgical techniques have also become increasingly sophisticated. Techniques like endoscopic surgery allow for smaller incisions and faster recovery times.
